Future of Curling in St Thomas
St. Thomas Elementary School Curling Program 2013-2014
The St Thomas Curling Club's commitment to working with elementary schools in the City of St Thomas brought curling to the school gym through the Rocks & Rings program and curling to the ice through the new St. Thomas Elementary School Curling Program. 2013-2014 was the inaugural year for the program. Elgin Court Public School, coached by John Laing and a grandparent Glenn Heard, had 11 curlers ranging from Grade 4-8. Curlers practiced Wednesday and Friday after school from Oct to April, culminating in two teams going to the Ontario Elementary School Championship held in Gravenhurst from April 2-6. The two teams, although missing the playoff round, were very competitive. The St.Thomas Curling Club, particularly General Manager Mike Adams, working with John established the St.Thomas Elementary School Curling League. Two Elgin Court teams played off for the first championship. The Gold Medal team and St.Thomas school champions was a combination of two Elgin Court PS students and two St.Anne's Catholic School students: Gabrielle McSloy (skip), Emileigh Gagne (vice), Taylor Goold (second), Hunter Csetri (lead). The Silver Medal team from Elgin Court PS consists of Ali MacPherson (skip), Madisen Rasmussen (vice), Emma Goold (second), Breanna McSloy (lead). The Bronze Medal team also from Elgin Court was a 3 person team alternating positions and consisted of Paige Thompson, Katelyn Pinnegar, and Julie Boyko.
